Wind Power - Embrace the revolution

9.00.00am GMT Wed 17th Nov 2004

After yesterday's call to save Europe's farmland birds, I have been contacted by a friend of mine suggesting I sign up to support wind power. Many of those that know me know that I am a keen advocate of wind and a move away from non-renewable forms of energy and in fact had huge discussions with various people about these and their opposition. Just to make it clear I am not in favour of planting wind farms everywhere, they have to be sensibly located and this means not just avoiding birds flight paths but also take in to account residents objections. But by building more wind farms and also harnessing solar and wave power we can reduce our dependency on fossil fuels.

Embrace the revolution.

Signing up to Embrace the Revolution, shows the government, policy makers and the media that there is strong support for wind energy in the UK. Climate change is a reality. Nine out of the ten warmest years on record occurred between 1990 and 2001. We urgently need to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels. UK gas supplies are being depleted - by 2020 we may need to import gas to cater for up to 80% of our electricity needs.

Wind power in the UK already generates enough energy to power half a million homes. It is creating thousands of new jobs. It is cheap, efficient and clean. A wind turbine produces electricity 70-80% of the time and only 3,500 additional modern wind turbines are needed for wind to supply the bulk of the country's 10% renewable target. An average wind turbine generates enough electricity to meet the demands of more than a thousand homes over the course of a year. Wind can help ensure that the UK meets its Kyoto targets and set us on a path to reduce CO2 emissions by 60% by 2050. Just one modern wind turbine will save over 4,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually
