Labour fails to deliver on its environmental targets

5.00.00pm GMT Wed 8th Dec 2004

The Labour Government is failing to deliver on it's own environmental targets. When Labour was elected it pledged to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 20% below the 1990 levels by 2010. Friends of the Earth say they are currently down just 7.5%, the same as in 1997.

Labour promised so much on the environmental agenda and have simply not delivered. They have failed to tackle climate chance and global warming seriously enough, it is yet another example of Labour setting targets without knowing how, or perhaps even have the desire to deliver them. Labour has allowed emissions from power stations and traffic to increase and not invested enough in alternative forms of energy or fully investigated taxing pollutants properly through a levy on aviation emissions for example.
