Government cuts recycling targets

3.00.00pm GMT Sun 12th Dec 2004

The Government, not content with reducing the UK's emission targets, have now cut recycling targets for Local Councils! The Departments for the Environment;s five year strategy allows for a quarter of Councils to cut their targets by up to 25%.

The UK is 12th (out of 15) in the European Union for recycling at just 13% (2001 figures) but has a EU target of recycling 25% of household wast by 2005/6. Moves such as the one just taken by the Government makes a mockery of this target and does nothing to help increase recycling rates. If this government was serious about the environmental it should be encouraging recycling and allocating extra financial resources.
