NO2ID - Identity Cards

11.51.29am GMT Tue 21st Dec 2004

UK National Identity Card (Design Mock-up)

Last night saw the House of Commons vote on the Second Reading of the Identity Cards Bill. the Government won the vote by 385 to 93 - a majority of 292 with 173 abstentions. The new Home Secretary Charles Clarke also admitted that the government would bring in compulsory identity cards once a voluntary system had been accepted by the British public.

I am against ID cards for many reasons, not just because they won't stop terrorists, eliminate benefit fraud, cost billions in taxpayers money but because they are fundamentally illiberal - I am proud it was a liberal but refusing to show his ID Card ensured they were abolished last time we had them and I have grave concerns about what information will be stored upon them and who could access that information.
