French reject the European Union Constitution

9.34.15pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 30th May 2005

Yesterday the French rejected the EU Constitution in a referendum by 55% to 45%. This effectively, in my opinion, kills off the EU Constitution. The Netherlands votes later this Wednesday and also look set to reject the Constitution in their referendum.

The referendum could throw the European Union into chaos as all nation states have to ratify the Constitution for it to come into force.

Jacques Chirac will address the French nation on television on Tuesday and make an announcement about the French government his office have said. It is widely expected that Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin will step down.
