Wolverhampton South West Tories in turmoil - Top Tory resigns as local party chair
8.00.00am GMT Thu 2nd Jun 2005
Wolverhampton South West Conservatives have been thrown into turmoil by the resignation of senior Tettenhall Councillor Joan Stevenson as Chair following their disastrous General Election result. The Conservatives not only failed to win the seat - one of their top targets nationally but polled almost 1,000 less votes than in 2001 and their share of the vote declined by 2.2%
Colin Ross, the Liberal Democrat General Election Candidate said "The Conservatives, whilst having a recovery nationally, fell back in Wolverhampton South West. Labour also fell back with less votes and their share of the vote declined by 3.9%. It was only the Liberal Democrats that moved forward. We increased our share of the vote by 5% and have had many enquiries about helping or joining the Liberal Democrats since the election, including former Conservative supporters."
