Liberal Democrats Win Cheadle By-election

2.12.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 15th Jul 2005

The Liberal Democrats have held Cheadle in yesterday's parliamentary by-election. Liberal Democrat Mark Hunter held the seat with 19,953 votes, a 3,657 majority over Tory candidate, the Labour Party lost their deposit after crashing to just 4.6% of the vote.

The election was triggered by the death of Lib Dem MP Patsy Calton from cancer shortly after May's general election. I was only able to get up to Cheadle to help once but am glad that I managed to get there.

The full result was as follows:

Liberal Democrat Mark Hunter - 19,593 votes, 52.2% +3.3%

Conservative - 15,936 votes, 42.2% +2%

Labour - 1,739 votes, 4.6% - 4.2%

Veritas - 218 votes, 0.6%

Alliance for Change - Suffering Little Children - 81 votes, 0.2%
