Welcome Turkey!

Last night finally saw the agreement to open EU accession talks with Turkey. It has taken around 40 years to get this far and could be anything between 10-15 years until accession becomes a reality.

Turkey, in my opinion, would be a welcome member of the European Union bringing a huge market, huge population and huge pool of talent to the EU. Turkey has over 70million residents, the vast majority of whom are Muslim which will hopefully dispel the image of the EU being an exclusively Christian club and could help relations with millions of Muslims in today's EU.

Turkey will have to meet certain criteria, including recognising Cyprus, before she she will be allowed to join and Austria and France will hold referendums on whether to admit Turkey if negotiations succeed.
