Earthquake hits Kashmir, Pakistan and India

4.04.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Sun 9th Oct 2005

A huge earthquake hit Kashmir, Pakistan and India yesterday, it measured 7.7 on the Richter scale. It is thought that 30,000 people were killed in Pakistani Kashmir alone. In Indian Kashmir more than 600 were reported dead. At least 50,000 were believed to be injured. The UN estimated that more than 2.5 million people needed shelter.

This is truly awful news, I know a number of people that came from Kashmir or their families did. Many still have family over there and my thoughts are with them at this time when they are trying to find out the latest news.

I had an opportunity to go to Kashmir last year but couldn't due to family commitments, I hope to be able to visit in the future and will certainly contributing to the aid charities to try and help with the aftermath.
