Merkel to be German Chancellor

Three weeks after the German Elections the CDU/CSU and SPD have agreed a grand coalition. Gerhard Schröder will resign and Ms Merkel will become both the first woman and the first former East German to lead the Berlin government.

The CDU and CSU has the largest number of seats but it was not enough to form a governing coalition with other centre-right parties. Both the CDU/CSU and the SPD and the Bundestag must approve the power-sharing deal.
