Cameron's plea to liberals9.37.43am GMT Tue 20th Dec 2005
On Friday David Cameron visited Hereford and made a plea for liberals and Liberals (small and big L's) to join him in the 'new liberal' Conservative Party. Cameron said the Conservative Party was a "new home" for liberals and that they should combine to beat Labour in marginal seats. He went further and has appealed directly to Liberal Democrat MPs and Councillors to defect to his party. In a speech he said Conservatives stood for "liberal values", including a commitment to green policies, localism and deregulation. I am not convinced Cameron is a liberal, certainly not the type I am anyway. Having looked at his record, which includes him being economic adviser when Black Wednesday took place and adviser to Michael Howard whilst he was shackling pregnant women about to give birth to beds, I disagree with him on much. On three of the key issues to me he has done to opposite to what a liberal should have done he has supported the War in Iraq, Tuition Fees and Identity Cards. So thanks David, but no thanks. Liberal Democrat President Simon Hughes MP said the Tories had "changed their salesman" but not "their product", saying the Liberal Democrats knew "rather more" than the Conservatives about the environment and social justice - the two themes Mr Cameron has focused on since taking over.
