Sir Michael Spicer to stand down

I am told Sir Michael Spicer is to stand down at the next General Election. Sir Michael is currently the MP for Worcestershire West, which saw one of the better results at the last General Election with the majority slashed from 5,374 to just 2,475. Sir Michael standing down with the continued campaigning of the local Liberal Democrats should see this seat fall to the Liberal Democrats next time, the last two results follow.

The 2005 General Election

Sir Michael Spicer, Conservative - 20,959 votes - 45.4%

Tom Wells, Liberal Democrat - 18,484 votes - 40.0%

Qamar Bhatti, Labour - 4,945 votes - 10.7%

Caroline Bovey, UK Independence Party - 1,590 votes - 3.4%

Malcolm Victory, Green Party - 199votes - 0.4%

Conservative majority: 2,475 votes

Turnout: 68.9 %

The 2001 general election

Sir Michael Spicer, Conservative - 20,597 votes - 46.0%

Mike Hadley, Liberal Democrat - 15,223 votes - 34.0%

Waquar Azmi, Labour - 6,275 votes - 14.0%

Ian Morris, UK Independence Party - 1,574 votes - 3.5%

Malcolm Victory, Green Party - 1,138 votes - 2.5%

Conservative majority: 5,374

Turnout: 67.1 %

I have campaiged in Worcestershire and plan to be far more active in helping their in the lead-up to the next General Election there to make sure we win next time!
