First dialogue in Karachi11.34.04am GMT Tue 9th May 2006
Its just gone 3pm here in Karachi and a short while ago we finished our first dialogue. There are seven of us from the UK, two Liberal Democrats (Ellen Kelly and myself), two Conservatives (both of which I have met before), two Labour and one SLDP.
We arrived yesterday at 5am Pakistani time, after a short break we had some briefings and met the Speaker of the Regional Assembly, went to Karachi University and met students and lecturers for a brief exchange of views. Afterwards we went a reception at the Deputy High Commissioners, followed by two TV interviews.
Today we had our first of five 'dialogues' - the seven of us met with about a dozen Karachi based young politicians, students, elected members and journalists. The introduction and initial outline went on a bit too long but once we got into the discussion it was very interesting and we all wanted a bit longer. There is not a huge gulf between what everyone wants to achieve and I have the feeling this week will be very positive for all involved, afterwards there was a another TV interview (and there will be one later tonight too).
In a few minutes we are off out again this time to meet with the Regional Governor.
