UK National Identity Card (Design Mock-up)

UK National Identity Card

According to the Sunday Times, who have their story from leaked emails, the Government's ID cards scheme is set to fail and may not be introduced for a generation. This is very good news if true, sadly we may not have beaten it because it fundamentally a bad idea but because logistical reasons.

The problems are apparently so serious that ministers have been forced to draw up plans for a scaled-down version to meet their pledge of phasing in the cards from 2008. However the civil servants have said that even this may not be possible. In one e-mail the prime minister is personally blamed with one civil servant writing "It was a Mr Blair apparently who wanted the 'early variant' card. Not my idea,"
