Kosovo's future status

8.04.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 27th Jul 2006

This week the Prime Ministers of Serbia and Kosovo met in Vienna to discuss Kosovo's future status. The UN envoy and former Finnish president Martti Ahtisaari mediated the meeting. Form all accounts it was quite a failure with neither side being able to agree a way forward.

The talks are into their sixth month now The Kosovans want nothing short of independence and the Serbians will not accept that so it is a bit of a stalemate situation. Kosovo has been under international rule since NATO bombed the Serbs out of Kosovo in 1999.

I have been to Kosovo once to observe their elections for OSCE and have very strong views that independence is the only answer. It will be interesting to see what happens next I suspect the UN will have to make the final decision as neither Kosovo or Serbia look like they will agree at all.
