Liberal Democrat Better Governance Policy Working Group

1.28.11pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 14th Sep 2006

The Liberal Democrat Federal Policy Committee is seeking applications from Liberal Democrats wishing to join a new working group on 'Better Governance', to be chaired by Lib Dem Peer Paul Tyler. The group's remit covers a range of constitutional and civil liberties issues.

It will be expected to address questions including: how to re-engage citizens with government and politics; how to ensure effective scrutiny and accountability of the executive by the legislature; how to make proposals for a modern constitutional settlement for the UK, including responding to the West Lothian question; and where the boundaries between the state and the citizen lie. The initial stage of the group's work will be informed by the on-line Taking Power virtual conference. The group will be required to produce a consultation paper for the spring 2007 party conference and a policy paper for the autumn 2007 conference.

  • The Federal Policy Committee wishes to recruit members for the Better Governance working group.

· We would especially welcome applications from underrepresented groups.

· For an application form and full remit for the working group

please contact the Policy Unit on 020 7227 1380 or email l.richards@libdems.org.uk.

· The deadline for applications is Friday 6th October 2006.
