Bush snubbed as the US votes3.03.22pm GMT Tue 7th Nov 2006
Early poll results show that Daniel wins in Nicaragua, whilst the US votes one of George Bush Seniors enemies looks set to return to power. Daniel Ortega and the Sandinista's look to return to power. I haven't seen any confirmed results yet but it looks like Daniel, as Mr Ortega is affectionate know, leads by a margin seemingly wide enough to avoid a run-off. The current US administration had campaigned against a Sandinista victory. Daniel Ortega was ousted from the presidency in 1990, after the US sponsored civil war and sanctions. Having been to Nicaragua there is much affection for Daniel, especially amongst the poorest of the poor and although his politics are different from mine I welcome his victory. Nicaragua is a country that is in desperate state and it is quite possible Ortega can deliver hope where the other candidates could not - lets hope so anyway.
