Democrats win, Bush sacrifices Rumsfield

10.43.16am GMT Thu 9th Nov 2006

So the Democrats won the House of Representatives convincingly and look likely to win the Senate too, although that could take months to finalise. The House of Representatives was almost guaranteed but to win big in the House and take the Senate is a massive result for the Democrats - the only question is can they screw it up before the Presidential elections - if past form is any guide, then quite possibly.

Bush has reacted by sacking Donald Rumsfeld as Defence Secretary. Whilst I have no problem with Rumsfield going, its very good of Bush to sacrifice his friends to save his own political neck. Bush, of course, should have accepted Rumsfeld resignation after the Abu Ghraib or sacked him then if he was at all serious about improving the situation in Iraq.
