Prostitution a way forward?

2.42.56pm GMT Wed 13th Dec 2006

The tragic events in Ipswich should force politicians - both local and national - to reconsider the issues surrounding prostitution. I appreciate the first priority is the catch the person(s) carrying out these murders, however many politicians will not be actively working with the police and can start thinking about the longer-term solutions.

It strikes me as quite obvious we should be looking to remove prostitution from the streets and completely legalise the sex industry, local councils need to look at licencing 'brothels' and looking at where in each area they should be placed. Most importantly this should reduce the danger that sex-workers face, if not completely eradicate it. It should also please those that want to hide (and hide from) the sex industry - although I expect there will be issues about locating the brothels if they were to be placed in residential areas.
