Here comes the Sun!

10.53.02am GMT Thu 21st Dec 2006

I have been waiting for this day for weeks - today is the Winter Solstice, the shortest day. Which of course means from tomorrow the days begin the get longer. I am convinced I suffer from Seasonal Adjustment Disorder (SAD) though have never had this confirmed as I just accept it and have not been to the Doctors about it. I have noticed I know a lot more people who also suffer from SAD now than I used to - not sure what that means, one person I know goes overseas at this time of year to try and combat it another is on pills at the moment.

Animals react to the changing seasons with changes in mood, metabolism and behaviour so I guess its not surprising humans do to. Most people find they eat and sleep slightly more in winter and dislike the dark mornings and short days.

I tend to eat far more in the Winter well as soon as it starts getting dark leading to increased weight gain this time of year and have real sleep problems and am having real problems getting out of bed. I am told others can suffer from quite bad depression, lethargy and also a general increased tension in their personal relationships.

So today is for all SAD sufferers - rejoice the sun is coming back!
