Environmentalism - The new religion?

4.47.28pm GMT Tue 13th Mar 2007

Well Environmentalism is definitely one of the key political stories this week, with the new Climate Change Bill having been published and speeches from both Gordon Brown and David Cameron and the C4 documentary. Last year I was discussing Environmentalism with a couple of friends and I remember one of them describe Environmentalism as the new religion of the secular society. She was right and perhaps its time to come out as a true believer!

I am obsessed with the environment and it really does guide the vast majority of my beliefs, my friends would confirm I am truly boring on the subject, always trying to turn lights off and try to change other peoples behaviour. Although I do not live a perfect environmental live I do try my best and continue to strive to improve.

I was glad to see Brown and Cameron speak on the environment this week, both were right (to a great extent) we not only need to do most of what they suggest but we need to go even further. I welcome today's Climate Change Bill (and personally rate Milliband and applaud him for his personal commitment). The Bill has a legally binding target for a reduction in carbon emission by 60% by 2050. The bill could have been bolder with binding annual target emission levels, or better still set a date for when the UK will become carbon neutral, but it is a massive step forward.
