West Midlands Police in stop and search row

9.37.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 29th Mar 2007

I wrote last week about Ming Campbell's visit to the West Midlands and his attack on the stop and search laws. Well it now turns out the West Midlands Police are being investigated after an Asian man claimed he was stopped and searched because of his ethnicity.

The 24-year-old Wolverhampton man was stopped on the A4123 Birmingham to Wolverhampton road last June. He said he was told to follow officers to a nearby industrial estate, where he and his vehicle were searched.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has begun an inquiry. The force did not want to comment.
