Sarah Carr will be the next Liberal Democrat candidate (and MP) for Hereford and South Herefordshire after being overwhelming selected tonight by local party members. At a packed meeting in the Shirehall (extra chairs were brought in!) the members heard presentations from three candidates and then had a question and answer session.

I first met Sarah Carr in 1995 when she was Paul Keetch's campaign organiser and I started going to help in Hereford. Since then we have remained close, we even shared a house after I graduated and she worked in the House of Lords. Sarah will make an excellent candidate and MP, she her husband and daughter have all moved to Hereford and she has an impressive schedule of activity for the first 100 days.

Sarah said, "I am honoured and delighted to have been selected to represent this constituency. Paul Keetch, Herefordshire's longest serving Liberal MP will be a hard act to follow. He has helped to put Hereford and South Herefordshire back on the map after years of Tory neglect."

Sarah masterminded Paul Keetch's first general election victory in 1997 where he overturned a Conservative majority of 2,277 votes to gain the seat by 6,648 votes.

Paul Keetch said, "I have known Sarah for over a decade and know that she will campaign hard for a fair deal for Herefordshire. I know that Sarah has the experience, determination and energy to retain our constituency for the Liberal Democrats at the next general election."

Sarah has already started campaigning in Ross-on-Wye, Hereford and Clehonger, meeting residents and talking to them about their concerns. Sarah is committed to being an active, visible member of the local community, campaigning full-time between now and the general election.

Sarah said "Living in Hereford I look forward to getting to know more local residents over the coming weeks and months. As the Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate I want to meet as many people as possible and listen to their hopes and hear their views. I am committed to serving the whole constituency, and the work starts now. I am determined to ensure that Hereford and South Herefordshire are well represented up to and beyond the next general election by a hard working Liberal Democrat MP."
