West Midlands Local Election Nominations facts and figures1.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 30th Mar 2007
The Liberal Democrats have almost fielded more candidates in this year's local elections than Labour. The Liberal Democrats have 528 candidates, Labour less than 40 more, the Conservatives beat both the Liberal Democrats and Labour. In fourth place are the Greens with 198 candidates and then the BNP with 122 candidates (All the figures exclude Parish Councils, otherwise I may never have got any figures.
The Liberal Democrats already have four Councillors elected unopposed: Nigel Hartin in South Shropshire David Murray in Bridgnorth Nigel Rock in Stratford Liz Tucker in Wychavon We also have held Brereton and Rugeley Parish Councils due to lack of opposition. Both Councils are in Cannock Chase Council area in Staffordshire. In Birmingham the Conservatives have failed to field a full slate, as have Labour in Solihull and Newcastle-Under-Lyme. In the rural areas of the West Midlands it is noticeable Labour have struggles to get candidates with no (thats right 0) candidates in either South Shropshire or Malvern Hills (both in areas where the Liberal Democrats could unseat the Conservatives at the General Election), they have just 8 candidates across Herefordshire, 6 across North Shropshire constituency (5 in North Shropshire Council area and 1 in Oswestry) and 7 in Wychavon. In Stratford-on-Avon we have more candidates (a full slate) than either the Conservatives or Labour. Stratford is another seat that the Liberal Democrats will be challenging in at the General Election.
