Conservatives hold on in Staffordshire, swing to the Liberal Democrats not quite enough

1.41.08pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 13th Jul 2007

The Conservatives held on to both Thistleberry and Keele Division and Westlands Ward in yesterday's by-elections. Both by-elections saw a swing to the Liberal Democrats. It is a great shame we narrowily missed out on gaining the Thistleberry and Keele Division by just 62 votes, well done to the team who I know worked very hard.

Thistleberry and Keele Division (Staffordshire County Council) result:

Conservatives - 1067 votes

Marion Reddish - Liberal Democrat - 1005 votes

Labour - 268 votes

UKIP - 204 votes

Westlands Ward (Newcastle under Lyme Council) result:

Conservative - 696 votes

Michael Shenton - Liberal Democrat - 229 votes

Labour - 126 votes

UKIP - 92 votes
