President Pervez Musharraf's political problems deepened yesterday when the Pakistan's supreme court has ruled that former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, is free to return to Pakistan after seven years in exile. Another former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto is also returning. Both are expected to return to front-line politics which spells bad news for Musharraf as he seeks re-election.

Mr Sharif hailed the verdict as a "defeat for dictatorship", General Musharraf's spokesperson Sheikh Rashid conceded it was bad news saying "We were expecting it, and we must respect the court's decision,"

Nawaz Sharif was Prime Minister from 1990 to 1993 and from 1997 to 1999.

Benazir Bhutto was Prime Minister from 1988 to 1990 and from 1993 to 1996.
