British MEP is jailed for benefit fraud!

4.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 4th Sep 2007

Ashley Mote, MEP for the South East of England has been jailed for benefit fraud after being found guilty of 21 offences after a four-week trial at Portsmouth crown court. He falsely claimed benefits of more than £65,000

He has been sentenced to nine months, he will continue to be an MEP and receive his salary. Only a sentence of 12 months or more would have resulted in Mr Mote having been expelled from the European Parliament, surely any custodial sentence should have resulted in expulsion.
