From Midnight the EU's Schengen Zone grew by an additional nine countries. The Schengen zone now covers 400 million people living in 24 states. The UK has still not joined and, as normal, is being left behind.

Cyprus and non-EU member Switzerland hope to join next year and Romania and Bulgaria by 2011.

Lech Walesa the former Polish President and co-founder of the Solidarity movement said "An improbable thing has happened - in many areas Europe is becoming one state," and "This is the way the world should look."
