Former Liberal Democrats Liberal Democrats Paddy Ashdown has been named as the new United Nations envoy to Afghanistan. It is said that Paddy will have greater powers than his predecessors but will have no oversight of the Nato chain of command. His main focus would be liaising between the 42,000 strong, 39-nation Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), a smaller US-led military coalition, a small EU police mission and the UN presence, he will also be responsible for coordinating UN agencies and NGOs delivering humanitarian assistance in the country.
