All-Ethnic-Minority shortlists

10.14.00am GMT Thu 14th Feb 2008

Apparently Birmingham Labour Party are up in arms about the prospect of all-ethnic-minority shortlists. Whilst Labour are fighting about this latest proposal, the Liberal Democrats in Birmingham are actually selecting ethnic minorities as candidates in winnable seats.

Councillor Tariq Khan has been selected in Hodge Hill, Councillor Ayoub Khan has been selected in Ladywood and Councillor Karen Hamilton has been selected in Perry Barr.

All three were selected in an open competition and were selected on merit as being the best person for the job, showing there is no need for all-ethnic-minority shortlists.

In all three seats the Liberal Democrats are second to Labour and could well win these seats at the General Election.
