Wolverhampton Liberal Democrats today witnessed the Last Post being played on a Cornet outside the Newhampton Road West Post Office in response to the Government and Royal Mail's attempt to close five Post Offices across Wolverhampton.

The Last Post was played to symbolise the potential closure of the Newhampton Road West Post Office, Upper Penn Post Office, Prestwood Road Post Office, Villiers Avenue Post Office and Portobello Post Office.

Liberal Democrat Park Councillor Robin Lawrence said "The Newhampton Road Post Office is the last Post Office in Park Ward." Fellow Liberal Democrat Councillor Claire Darke added "We have run a consultation in the surrounding area and are now stepping up our campaigning to convince Royal Mail and the Government not to close this Post Office."

Penn Liberal Democrat June Hemsley is also leading the battle to save the Upper Penn Post Office, June said "The response to my petition is fantastic and many members of the community are getting involved, hopefully we can save the Post Office."

Campaigner Daren Friel is also undertaking consultation regarding the Portobello Post Office on Willenhall Road.

Wolverhampton Liberal Democrats have also launched an online petition to save Post Offices at risk of closure. The petition calls on the Government to halt the closures, you can sign the petition at http://www.wolverhamptonlibdems.org.uk/petitions/
