Polls taken after this weeks hustings organised by the University of Wolverhampton have shown that the majority of students present will be voting Liberal Democrat.

Putting questions to Robin Lawrence and other candidates students asked about issues such degree standards, unemployment and economic recovery proposals as well as the burning issue affecting all students: tuition fees.

Robin Lawrence was the only candidate from the main parties to sign the NUS pledge on tuition fees and in doing so called on other candidates to join him in taking a principled stand - the Conservative and Labour candidates refused to sign the pledge.

Robin said "I am happy to sign the NUS pledge on tuition fees because the Liberal Democrats are the only party that has a fully costed policy that will see tuition fees for first degrees scrapped by 2016. None of the other main parties are willing to make that commitment."

Robin thanked the NUS for the very hard work that they do in supporting all Wolverhampton University's students and added, "Students are extremely concerned about many issues but are most worried about mounting debt levels."

During the debate Robin also called for continuing rises in the standard of accommodation for students living in private rental properties. He welcomed Wolverhampton Council's actions on House of Multiple Occupancy licences which guarantee that many student houses meet strict safety standards.

Following the debate an exit poll was taken by the Wolverhampton Students' Union. Results from that poll showed that the Liberal Democrats were the clear winners among student voters.

Commenting on the result Robin Lawrence said "This result shows students have recognised that it is the Liberal Democrats who are the only party that has fairness hard-wired through all its policies."

Students who are registered to vote can also vote for the Liberal Democrats in Wolverhampton Council's local elections on 6th May.
