Colin Ross

Liberal Democrat Campaigner

Colin Ross

Hello and welcome, thank-you for visiting my website.

For those of you that do not know me I am Colin Ross. I am 33 and live in Wolverhampton. I currently work for a West Midland Local Authority and am an active Liberal Democrat.

Background

I was born in London but have chosen to make the West Midlands my home. I first moved to the West Midlands in 1994 to go to the University of Wolverhampton where I did a degree in Politics with Law.

After University I was elected as the sabbatical Communications Officer for the Liberal Democrat Youth and Students (LDYS). My main responsibilities in this role were designing and editing a bimonthly magazine, organising two conferences a year and our presence at a number of others (Federal, State and Regional), co-ordinating the Liberal Democrat's presence in Universities, raising awareness amongst young people and organising (and delivering) training.

After LDYS I worked as the Local Youth Council Development Officer for the British Youth Council (BYC). My main responsibilities in this role were setting up and developing local and regional youth councils around the UK (the total number doubled whilst I was in post), editing a quarterly newsletter, organising a yearly convention and undertaking many speaking events and delivering training to local youth councils.

In November 1999 I left BYC and spent nine months travelling. I travelled in Southern Africa (South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana), across Australia, Papua New Guinea (I had previously been to New Zealand), Central and North America (Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Belize, Mexico, some of the United States and the eastern part of Canada).

On my return I worked as a Campaigns Officer for the Liberal Democrats in various locations including Hereford, Ludlow and Shrewsbury and Atcham constituencies. My main responsibilities in this role were the planning and execution of various campaigns, organising volunteers and staff, producing literature and ensuring the election or re-election of Liberal Democrats at all levels of government.

In November 2002 I left the UK again and spent six months travelling. This time I travelled around South America visiting all bar three of the continent's countries (Ecuador - including the Galapagos Islands, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia and back to Ecuador)

On my return I worked as the Parliamentary Campaigns Officer for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). My main responsibilities in this role were planning and execution of various campaigns and working with our volunteers and providing support and training to help them maximise their impact. I stayed at the RSPB until I took my current job.

Interests

My main interest is in Politics and Public Affairs, especially relating to the environment, equality issues, Europe, foreign affairs and international aid/developing nations.

I enjoy travelling, meeting new people and experiencing new cultures, I have travelled extensively in Central, South and North America, as well as in Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, Hong Kong and Europe including Kosovo, Russia and Ukraine as well as most of Western Europe. Most recently I have been to Pakistan and Japan.

I enjoy reading, either (auto) biographies or fiction my favourite authors are Tom Clancy and John Grisham. I also enjoy going to cinema and try to go a couple of times a month.
